Basic Function:  The basic function of the Cafe Clerk is to serve Deli Customers at Erewhon Natural Foods in a polite, professional and efficient manner.  In addition the Deli Clerk is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the department.

 

Requirements:  (education, experience, skills, working conditions, physical demands):  The cafe Clerk must possess a High School Diploma or GED equivalent.  Experience in Health/Natural Food Restaurant preferred.  Employee must be Customer Service oriented and possess a strong knowledge of organic products and the natural food industry in general.  Work environment is primarily in the cafe involving standing, working over hot and cold food cases and waiting on customers for long periods of time.  Employee will be in and out of refrigerators.  Position involves standing, sitting, kneeling, product stocking and beverage preparation.  Must be able to bend, reach for product and lift cases with product up to 50 pounds.  Employee must have food handler certification.  Employees must be able to communicate with customers clearly in English.  Bi-Lingual is preferred.

 

Authority:  (to take action/make decisions):  The cafe Clerk has the authority to make decisions which will benefit the customer while protecting the profitability of the department.

 

Duties/Tasks:  (Indicate how task is done – daily, weekly, monthly, etc.)

 

  1)   Meet and greet customers at the cafe counter (Daily).

  2)   Determine the customer's needs and prepare their selection (Daily)

  3)   Properly weigh and charge the customer for their purchase (Daily).

  4)   Select a container size which is appropriate for the purchase (Daily)

  5)   Make suggestions to up-sell product to the customer which is appropriate for their selection (Daily).

  6)   Help to set up the display cases with product (Daily).

  7)   Keep display cases, counter, salad bar, soup bar and outside display cases clean and presentable throughout the day (Daily).

  8)   Check proper temperature of food in the display cases to maintain Health Department Standards (As required).

  9)   Maintain Food Handler's Certification (As required).

10)   Participate in product sampling (As requested).

11)   Fill in paper supplies for utensils (As required).

12)   Break down the display cases at the end of the day, properly securing the product and returning it to it's proper storage space

         (As required by shift).

13)   Rotate or remix stock to maintain fresh appearance of the display (Daily).

14)   Answer telephone (As required).

15)   Help manager prepare for quarterly inventory (Quarterly).

16)   Participate in regular staff training seminars (As required).

17)   Notify managers and cooks of low/out of stock items to trigger replenishment (As required)

18)   Follow employees guidelines for attendance, dress code and rules and regulations as outlined in the employee handbook (Daily).

19)   Help train new employees (As required).

20)   Other duties as assigned by management (As required)
